Holy chimichanga, Batman! The Merc is back, and mouthier than ever.
Who is Deadpool 2 for? People who liked Deadpool. People who enjoy their humor crass, crude, creative, and occasionally intelligent. Fans of digital anatomy.
Who is Deadpool 2 not for? People who didn’t like Deadpool. People who may be offended by (insert anything here). Fans of time travel that makes sense and consistency across comic book canon.
Hyper violence? Weird nudity? Urbandictionary-worthy foul language? Self-aware snark? An irreverence towards (insert anything here)? Ryan Reynolds? Yep, must be a Deadpool movie.
If the first Deadpool made you go – “oh, they went there!” this one will have you going “oh, they went EVERYwhere!!” Reynolds goes full steam with more of what made the first film entertaining and unique. A lot more. It’s not just the jokes that a bigger and more frequent – the plot is also. It’s still fairly thin, but it’s a more involved story with higher stakes than before. The supporting cast all get moments to shine – impressive since if Reynolds’ Deadpool was rated in lumens he’d be somewhere in the “don’t look or you’ll go blind” category.
The writers swing at just about everything – nailed down or otherwise – and skewer everything from specific comic book artists to pervy scout masters, and most things in between. The easily bothered should not bother with this one, but really, you knew that already. With the jokes going a mile a second, an impressive amount of them land nicely, making for one hilarious time, so long as this sort of thing doesn’t bother you. Which, again, why are even considering watching this movie if it does?
What’s impressive is how many comic book nerds this movie might get wound up due to what it does with and to certain characters. If you hold comic books sacred, do as Lemony Snickett says, and look away.
At the end of the day, this movie accomplishes little, other than being an amusing diversion for certain people. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It shows that the genre can have multiple dimensions at least. It exists in its own little world and won’t leave you better off for seeing it, or make you think about much – though it has a few smart moments. But hey, you’ll laugh your (insert anything here) off.
Bonus – the mid-credits scene is the best super hero movie stinger. Ever. But if you had any hope left that the X-universe could come together into some sort of cohesive thing, consider those dreams dashed.
