After Avengers: Infinity War, we take a step back to a smaller story, catching up with just what Scott Lang and company have been up to while everyone else was trying to stop Thanos from destroying half the universe. Presenting, the 20th film in the ever growing MCU.
Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and the Wasp follows Scott (Paul Rudd) as he tries to finish out his house arrest sentence in peace. Entanglement with the Van Dyne family, however, is going to make that a challenge.
When evidence surfaces that Janet Van Dyne may still be alive and waiting for rescue from the quantum realm after all these years her husband and daughter will stop at nothing to save her. A mysterious super powered stranger, the FBI, and a conniving black market dealer all stand in their way. Good thing they’ve got a trick or fifty up their sleeves.
Keeping the tale small (no pun intended, I swear!) and contained, the sequel follows in the same vein as the first film as a (mostly) stand alone comedic heist flick. If you stop to to think too hard, the physics and rules of Pym Particles don’t always make sense, the plot is a little contrived, and their are moments of true absurdity you just have to accept. Thankfully, the film moves at a brisk and exceedingly entertaining pace to keep your mind off those sorts of things. Just accept that there are no issues with tossing a shrunken building around like a beach ball and you’ll be fine. This is NOT the film to take your physics professor to.
There are some clever connections to the greater MCU which are rewarding for fans, but honestly you could go into this one pretty much blind and still have a blast. The battles keep getting more creative, using the shrinking/growing powers to great comedic effect as well as using them in some pretty kick-ass ways as well. There are a plethora of hilarious characters as well as a good number of straight players for them to bounce off of. It’s a little all over the place at times, but overall quite effective.
This franchise is so much fun, and provides a breath of levity after the events of Infinity War – don’t let its small size fool you or let it slip through the cracks. Go see it.
